Jenny Berkel, Here On A Wire

“Throw me a bone, I am desperate for a home
To hide these dangerous wounds
Love is a stone that hits heavy when it’s thrown
And I am heavy struck by you”

Manitoban singer-songwriter Jenny Berkel’s debut album, Here On A Wire, will have that effect on you. Her voice resembles Sarah McLaughlin but with deeper tones and her wonderfully poetic songs are deeply personal, reflective and always beautiful.

Producer Matt Peters (Royal Canoe, The Waking Eyes) is a perfect fit for these songs, bringing in a wide breadth of musical talent by adding hints of electric guitar, organ and his love for horn arrangements; all are thoughtfully placed throughout the record. Thankfully, Peters also has the common sense of just letting Berkel break your heart as her voice and guitar always take centre stage (See “You Don’t Hesitate” and “Crook Of Now & Then”).

“Throw me a bone, I am desperate for a home”  – indeed, Here On A Wire, will find a permanent home in my collection and is one of my favourite folk albums of the year. (Independent) ~ 4 Stars
